Trivia about Those About to Die

Emmerich got his start in television after watching Game of Thrones, and decided to make a series tied to his fascination with the Roman Empire.

The production used the "Volume" virtual set system for 108 days of shooting, with digital environments created by DNEG and Dimension Studio.

The title is a nod to the greeting to the emperor in the games that was never confirmed: "Ave, Caesar, morituri te salutant."

The series has a budget of $140 million, according to the announcement made after Peacock ordered the series in July 2022.

The series has a 47% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a Metacritic average score of 49 out of 100 from 23 critics.

The series will likely not get a second season: executive producer Stuart Ford explained that its performance on Peacock didn't justify the production cost, although it was a major international hit.

Production began at the Cinecittà Studios in Rome in March 2023, and Iwan Rheon replaced Lorenzo Richelmy in the cast during that phase.

The series team initially laid out a roadmap for several seasons, but Peacock had not yet confirmed a renewal when the first season ended.
