Anthony Hopkins reads every script more than two hundred times until the words lose their meaning and only the music of the text remains. It isn't about chasing emotion but about the technical precision of a watchmaker who knows where each piece goes so the mechanism works.
The son of a baker in Port Talbot, young Anthony preferred the piano to his textbooks, because the silence of the keys made more sense to him than math. His dyslexia defined those formative years in Wales, where he felt like an outsider among his classmates.
And then Richard Burton showed up.
His encounter with a fellow Welshman drove him to enroll at the College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. After completing his military service in 1958, he moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, determined to leave his humble origins behind.
In 1965, Laurence Olivier signed him for the National Theatre after seeing him perform in an audition that Hopkins himself remembers as an ordeal full of nerves. But the London stage brought on a creative claustrophobia that eventually boiled over before its time.
His film debut in The Lion in Winter in 1968 let him share the screen with Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. It was the first sign that his physical presence could fill the screen without big gestures or unnecessary shouting.
He spent years making low-budget productions in the United States while fighting his addiction to alcohol. In 1975, he decided to quit drinking for good, and his career took a different direction built on absolute discipline. For him, acting isn't a feeling but a mechanical craft.
He needed only sixteen minutes of screen time.
His portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs during 1991 earned him the Oscar for Best Actor. He took home the statuette with one of the shortest appearances in awards history, thanks to that unblinking stare he held in front of the camera.
And the gamble paid off.
That late success let him choose projects with a freedom few actors enjoy past their fifties. He worked with James Ivory on The Remains of the Day in 1993, and then took direction from Oliver Stone for Nixon in 1995, where he played the president with icy restraint.
Many actors retire once they reach their seventies, but Hopkins chose to speed up his work to avoid mental stagnation. In 2020, he starred in The Father under the direction of Florian Zeller, offering a raw dissection of senile dementia from the inside.
That performance earned him his second Oscar in 2021. That award made him the oldest winner in the Best Actor category at 83 years old. He skipped the ceremony and stayed home in Wales, sleeping while the world waited for his speech over a video call.
He never looks his fellow actors in the eye during rehearsals.
In 2023 he played the philanthropist Nicholas Winton in the film One Life, and in 2024 he shot Those About to Die, a series about the Roman Empire. He still posts videos on social media where he dances or cooks at his home in Malibu, a way of keeping spontaneity alive in front of the public.
He gave up his British citizenship in 2000 when he became a U.S. citizen in a private ceremony in Los Angeles.
