In 2012, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, becomes disillusioned with the direction of the Catholic Church and asks Pope Benedict XVI for permission to step down. The pontiff, however, summons him to Rome, to Vatican City. There, the two men hold long conversations in which their ideas about tradition and progress clash. Bergoglio arrives critical and intent on leaving, while Benedict tries to change his mind. The backdrop is a recent controversy: the leak of secret Vatican documents has tarnished the papacy. Directed by Fernando Meirelles, the film brings these two men to life, with Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce in the lead roles.
