Synopsis of El marginal

Miguel Palacios is a former police officer who, posing as a convict, strikes a deal with Cayetano Lunati, a powerful and corrupt judge. His plan is to enter the San Onofre prison in Argentina under a false identity, that of Osvaldo Pastor Peña. There, he aims to locate the judge's teenage daughter, who is believed to have been kidnapped by a mixed gang of inmates and guards led by Mario Borges and Juan Pablo Diosito Borges. Miguel must win the trust of the criminals without revealing who he really is. Juan Minujín stars as the protagonist in a series created by Sebastián Ortega and Adrián Caetano and aired on Televisión Pública.

Trivia about El marginal

The first season won the Martín Fierro de Oro, a Tato Award and a Series Mania Award, and was nominated for the Platino Awards for Best Miniseries or Television Series.

The third season debuted with 13.5 rating points, a record high that made it the most-watched show of the day.

Following the series' warm reception, multinational network Telemundo bought its rights and planned an American version, which premiered in 2018 as El recluso.

Along with Estocolmo, this series was the first Argentine television production that Netflix acquired in 2016.

The second season averaged 9.6 rating points on its premiere, a record high for a drama on the national public channel.

Some prison riot scenes in the San Onofre courtyard brought together more than one hundred actors during filming of the series.

The first three seasons were filmed at the former Caseros prison, while the fourth recreated Puente Viejo prison in a building in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Almagro.

The spin-off En el barro moved the series' world to a women's prison and premiered on Netflix on August 14, 2025.
