Synopsis of Oz

In New York State stands Oswald Penitentiary, known to nearly everyone as Oz, a maximum-security prison. Inside, an experimental unit called the Emerald City operates, where unit director Tim McManus argues that inmates should learn to take responsibility during their sentences instead of simply being punished. To avoid clashes, the space is managed with a careful balance between racial and social groups, although nearly all the factions remain at odds with one another. Augustus Hill, a wheelchair-using inmate, recovering drug addict and former dealer, introduces the episodes and offers social commentary on prison life. Created by Tom Fontana and aired on HBO, the series shows modern, well-kept facilities where survival remains the priority and fear is a daily companion for prisoners.

«Life's not a word. It's a sentence.»

Trivia about Oz

Oz was the first one-hour drama series produced by HBO, a premium cable network.
The first season earned a 70 on the review aggregator Metacritic, indicating generally favorable reviews.
The series won four ALMA Awards from sixteen nominations and three Artios Awards from six nominations.
Although it did not win any major award, it received two Primetime Emmy nominations, one for Charles S. Dutton and another for Alexa L. Fogel.
The soundtrack, released by Avatar Records, reached number 1 on Billboard's soundtrack charts and number 42 on the Billboard 200.
In Japan, it aired on SuperChannel, now Super! Drama TV, between December 29, 2001 and July 22, 2005.
Before casting Jon Seda for "Oz," Tom Fontana warned him that Dino Ortolani would have a short run on the series; he later brought the actor back for the last two seasons as Detective Paul Falsone.
The sixth season added Patti LuPone, Joel Grey and Betty Buckley; Fontana and casting director Alexa Fogel explained that gathering so many Tony Award winners and nominees was a coincidence.
