Lance Reddick stood nearly six foot three and spoke with a cadence reminiscent of a cello. Before stepping onto a television set, he trained as a classical musician at the University of Rochester. His obsession was composition and piano, but the realities of the music industry forced him to look for alternatives to support his family.
A back injury during his younger years kept him from keeping up with intensive rehearsals. In 1991, he decided to study acting at Yale to find a stable financial path that would make the most of his imposing physique. So he traded sheet music for stage scripts in a desperate attempt to avoid personal bankruptcy.
It was a pragmatic decision.
In 2002, he landed the role of Cedric Daniels in The Wire. That Baltimore police lieutenant became the moral center of a series that took years to win over the general public. Reddick spent hours rehearsing his character's rigid posture to convey an almost military discipline that concealed the system's corruption.
But his career was not limited to HBO's realistic drama. In 2008, he joined the cast of Fringe to play Phillip Broyles, a Department of Homeland Security agent. The actor gave the character an icy humanity that worked perfectly in plots about parallel universes and impossible scientific experiments.
The audience trusted him.
During that period, he also lent his voice and face to the video game industry. In 2017, he took part in Horizon Zero Dawn, playing Sylens, an enigmatic character that required extremely precise motion capture. Reddick understood that technology was not an obstacle to acting but simply another tool.
Production on John Wick in 2014 needed a face that commanded respect at the Continental Hotel. Reddick took on the role of Charon and built a relationship of quiet loyalty with the lead character. His work in this franchise spanned nearly a decade of shoots in New York and Europe.
His presence held the hotel together.
In 2022, he took part in the series Resident Evil, playing Albert Wesker. Despite the negative reviews aimed at the production, the actor's performance was the only thing the specialized press praised unanimously. Reddick always argued that a good script is defended with a look rather than with excessive dialogue.
On March 17, 2023, he died at his Studio City home of natural causes related to ischemic heart disease. He was 60 years old. His appearance in the spin-off Ballerina, slated for 2025, was still awaiting release.
