Chad Stahelski got a call in 1993 that nobody wanted to take. Brandon Lee had died on the set of The Crow, and the production needed a double with an identical build to finish the remaining footage. That grim assignment was his baptism by fire in the industry.
Before that event, he trained in martial arts at Dan Inosanto's academy. He wasn't seeking fame. But fate placed him in front of the cameras in a way that was both traumatic and professional.
In 1999, his career changed when he met Keanu Reeves on the set of The Matrix. Stahelski didn't just stand in for the lead in the stunt scenes. He became obsessed with the movement-driven storytelling and the technical precision the Wachowskis demanded in every take.
He co-founded the company 87eleven with David Leitch to design choreography that no one else dared to perform. They wanted audiences to see the real impact without frantic editing cuts. Visual clarity was their top priority.
And the industry took notice.
In 2014, he co-directed John Wick with Leitch, although his name did not appear in the directing credits due to union rules. They had a budget of seven million dollars and a clear idea. Audiences were tired of confusing action and cheap digital effects.
He revived the style of Hong Kong action cinema and blended it with judo and handgun techniques. This approach became popularly known as gun-fu. The first installment grossed $86 million and brought Reeves back to the top tier of the film industry.
The bet paid off.
In 2017, he took on solo directing duties for John Wick: Chapter 2. This time, he expanded the mythology of an underworld of assassins with strict rules and luxury hotels. He didn't use stunt doubles for Reeves's driving scenes because the actor was already capable of performing the maneuvers after months of intense training.
Because Stahelski believes the actor has to suffer a little for the audience to believe the story, his shoots are known for their physical toughness and the constant repetition of takes until they reach geometric perfection.
In 2019, he released the third installment of the franchise with a much bigger budget. He introduced combat-trained dogs and motorcycle chases across New York bridges. The technical complexity of the cameras was so high that they had to build custom rigs for the camera operators.
But Stahelski wanted more. In 2023, he shot the fourth movie in the franchise, running almost three hours. It included an overhead-shot sequence that looked like a shooter video game. That scene took weeks to choreograph and required a custom overhead lighting system.
The franchise has grossed more than $1,000 million in total.
In 2024, he signed a strategic deal with Lionsgate to oversee the entire future of the John Wick and Highlander franchises. This gives him creative power that few action directors have had in Hollywood history. His control extends from the scripts to the selection of stunt performers.
Filming for the new version of Highlander was scheduled for 2025, with Henry Cavill as the lead. Stahelski designed a sword-training program that lasts six months before principal photography begins. The budget for the fourth installment of his assassin franchise topped $`100 million.
