Gary Daniels wasn't looking for fame when he arrived in the Philippines in the mid-1980s. He just wanted to fight and make some quick money in very low-budget productions.
His background in professional kickboxing was his ticket in.
In films like Final Reprisal (1988), he learned that in action cinema, sweat matters more than method. These were guerrilla shoots where choreography was improvised in the mud and safety measures were practically nonexistent. But that wild environment shaped a physical style that Hollywood would soon start to notice.
Hong Kong's film industry took notice of him for his ability to throw roundhouse kicks with almost surgical precision. In 1993, he had a moment that many genre fans still remember.
Daniels played one of the hitmen in City Hunter and faced off against Jackie Chan in a fight that parodied the video game Street Fighter II. That sequence gave him the visibility he needed to break into the American market.
But Hollywood doesn't always know what to do with a martial artist who prefers raw impact to flashy artifice.
He starred in Fist of the North Star in 1995 (an adaptation of the manga of the same name) and became a familiar face on video store shelves. He sold millions of copies on VHS while mainstream critics systematically ignored him. His audience wasn't looking for great dialogue but for the honesty of a guy who knew how to take a punch.
Sylvester Stallone called him in 2010 to join the cast of The Expendables. It was a late recognition of a career built on hands-on shoots and very few stunt doubles.
On that production, he shared the screen with the legends he had admired since he was young.
He played Bryan Fury in the film Tekken (2010) and proved his physique could still keep up with the new generation of fighters. He kept working tirelessly on the independent circuit.
In 2022, he shot Bring Him Back Dead under the direction of Chad Law. Two years later, he appeared in The Last Kumite (2024), directly appealing to fans of 1990s tournament films who were nostalgic for the genre.
He accepted the role because the project aimed to revive classic fight choreography without relying heavily on digital effects. The production had a budget of seven hundred thousand euros raised through crowdfunding.
