Richard Cetrone wasn't looking for fame when he began training in martial arts in Pennsylvania. His entry into the film industry happened organically in the early 1990s. In 1994, he took part in The Pagans, and from that moment on, his body became his main work tool.
Risk was the norm.
In 1998, he worked on Vampires by John Carpenter. That experience defined his ability to endure physically exhausting shoots under heavy makeup. But the real change of pace came when he crossed paths with a director who saw action as operatic choreography.
Zack Snyder recruited him for 300 in 2006. Cetrone played several soldiers and performed stunts that demanded pinpoint precision. The working relationship between the two became so close that the stuntman has been involved in nearly all of the American director's films.
In 2009, he performed the action sequences for Watchmen. That shoot was a true endurance test because of how complex the costumes were. And although his face didn't always appear on screen, his physical presence drove the most violent scenes in the film.
People sometimes forget that behind the Batman armor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 was him. Cetrone performed the famous warehouse scene that many critics consider the character's best fight on screen. Ben Affleck trusted his movements completely to give weight to the Dark Knight.
He took on the challenge of the living dead.
In 2017, he took part in the original version of Justice League and returned to his role as the main action double. His working method involves studying the gestures of the actor he stands in for so that the transition between drama and fighting is invisible to the viewer's eye.
His career hasn't been all capes and armor. In 2014, he worked on Captain America: The Winter Soldier for Marvel. His imposing presence has also allowed him to play characters with their own identity beyond the shadows of the leads.
In 2021, he played Zeus in Army of the Dead. It was a role where the makeup didn't hide his ability to convey menace through body movement. The production required months of training to handle heavy weapons in desert settings with extreme temperatures.
And the gamble paid off.
Ahead of the release of Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire in 2023, he worked again with his usual team. In that film, he played a combat android named Jimmy in the most physically demanding sequences. Filming stretched over 152 days across the two consecutively shot parts of the space saga.
In 2024, he wrapped up work on projects that strengthen his position in the Hollywood stunt industry. Richard Cetrone lives in Los Angeles and supervises fight choreography for big-budget productions. The injury rate in his profession exceeds sixty percent per year, according to actors' union data.
