Diane Lane was thirteen years old when George Roy Hill put her in front of a camera alongside Laurence Olivier. It was in A Little Romance (1979). Olivier said she was the new Grace Kelly, and the press went wild before the girl had even finished high school.
Francis Ford Coppola called her to be the female face of The Outsiders in 1983. That same year she worked with the director again on Rumble Fish. These were films full of testosterone and sweat, where she provided the necessary calm. But that's how movies go, and the big project that was supposed to launch her to superstardom sank at the box office.
The Cotton Club (1984) cost a fortune and didn't recoup even half its budget. Critics were brutal about the production, and Lane decided she'd had enough of Hollywood for a while.
She moved to Georgia to live with her mother and stopped reading scripts.
She spent three years away from the spotlight before returning with smaller projects. In 1989 she appeared in the miniseries Lonesome Dove and regained the industry's respect. She took supporting roles in major productions such as Judge Dredd (1995) or The Perfect Storm (2000) while waiting for a script that truly matched her talent.
The industry truly rediscovered her in 2002 with Unfaithful. Adrian Lyne trusted her with a role other actresses had turned down because of the character's erotic charge. Lane played a well-off woman who cheats on her husband in a gray, damp New York.
She earned her only Oscar nomination thanks to a scene shot on a train. In those minutes, her face moves from remorse to pleasure without a single word. It's pure cinema. But the statuette went to Nicole Kidman for wearing a nose prosthetic in The Hours.
From there, her career settled into comfortable territory of adult dramas and light romantic comedies. In 2003 she shot Under the Tuscan Sun, and in 2005 What Women Want. These were profitable films that played up her image as an elegant, approachable woman.
And then the superheroes arrived.
Zack Snyder chose her in 2013 to play Martha Kent in Man of Steel. It's a supporting but essential role in the Superman universe. Lane reprised the part in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and in the various versions of Justice League.
In recent years she has found better roles on the small screen than on the big one. In 2018 she joined the cast of House of Cards for its final season. Three years later she starred in the post-apocalyptic series Y: The Last Man (2021), playing a congresswoman in a world without men.
In 2024 she appeared in the series Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, playing Slim Keith. Ryan Murphy's production demanded a level of sophistication that Lane handles with astonishing ease. That same year she also shot A Man in Full for Netflix under David E. Kelley's direction.
Lane has never sought to be the star of every headline. She prefers working with directors who understand that her greatest asset is her gaze. Before shooting, she reads the script searching for the truth of the character, not the number of lines assigned to her.
Diane Lane has worked on more than sixty productions across film and television. Her salary for The Cotton Club was two million dollars, a figure that in 1984 was considered a scandal for a nineteen-year-old actress.
