Kate Beckinsale left the University of Oxford to shoot in Tuscany under the direction of Kenneth Branagh. It was 1993 and the film was Much Ado About Nothing. That debut put the daughter of comic actor Richard Beckinsale on the map as one of Britain's most academically promising talents. But she had other plans far from period drama.
And she executed them quickly.
After appearing in Robert Poste's Daughter, the industry saw her as the natural heir to Jane Austen's heroines. But Beckinsale preferred to explore American independent cinema. In 1998, she starred in The Last Days of Disco and proved that her accent could be as New York as any native's. That performance in Whit Stillman's film opened the doors of the major California studios for her.
The turn of the century brought the blockbuster Pearl Harbor in 2001. Michael Bay wanted a face that wasn't too well known so as not to overshadow the war story. Beckinsale earned just $50,000 for that leading role. It was the moment her private life began to take up as much space as her work in the tabloid press.
Critics were not kind to the film.
But the real turning point came in 2003 with Underworld. Nobody imagined a classically trained actress clad in latex and wielding automatic weapons. The film grossed nearly $100 million worldwide and spawned a franchise that ran for more than a decade. Beckinsale went from corsets to pure action cinema without looking back, because the market demanded heroines who could hold their own.
During the shoot, she met director Len Wiseman, and their marriage became one of the most closely followed in Hollywood. Her career was therefore tied for years to dark aesthetics and vampires. The Underworld franchise went on to five installments that kept her name on the lists of the most bankable actresses in the international industry.
Despite the commercial success of Selene, the actress sought refuge in projects with more narrative weight. In 2004, she played Ava Gardner in The Aviator, directed by Martin Scorsese. She had to gain weight for the role and take on the shadow of a classic Hollywood legend. The film earned 11 Oscar nominations and proved her ability to carry complex characters alongside major stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio.
Not everything went right.
In 2016 she reunited with Whit Stillman for Love & Friendship. Her performance as Lady Susan Vernon is considered by many experts to be the high point of her professional career. It is a role full of rapid-fire dialogue and an ambiguous morality that suited her sharp intellect. Because before becoming an action star, Beckinsale was already one of the brightest minds of her generation of actors.
In 2024, she filmed the action thriller Canary Black in Croatia. The production suffered delays and logistical complications that tested the resilience of the crew on location. That same year, the actress shared details about her health problems after months of speculation in the digital media. The film premiered directly on streaming platforms without going through traditional movie theaters.
