Joanna Lumley was born in Srinagar in 1946. Her father served in the Gurkha Rifles, and that connection to India shaped her character before the family returned to the United Kingdom. She was educated at private schools but never attended a drama school.
She began as a photography model in the 1960s. She worked for Brian Duffy and posed for London's most important fashion magazines without any previous experience in front of a film camera.
It was a pragmatic decision.
In 1969, she landed a brief role in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. She had only three lines, but it taught her how a big-budget shoot works. Mass recognition, however, would take a few more years to arrive through British television.
In 1976, she was cast as Purdey in The New Avengers. Her haircut became so famous that London hair salons received hundreds of requests a day to copy her style. The series was sold to 120 countries, and Lumley became the face of stylish action in Europe.
But her real change of direction came in 1992. Jennifer Saunders offered her the role of Patsy Stone in Absolutely Fabulous, and Lumley accepted even though her agents had serious doubts about the project.
Patsy was an alcoholic, promiscuous and decadent fashion editor. She broke with the image of sophistication the actress had projected for decades and allowed her to explore almost wild physical comedy.
And the gamble paid off.
The show stayed on the air on and off until 2012. Over those years she balanced her character's excesses with travel documentaries along the Nile and in Greece. But she never gave up commercial cinema, and in 2013 she appeared in The Wolf of Wall Street under the direction of Martin Scorsese.
Outside the studio, she led the campaign for the rights of Gurkha soldiers in 2008. She won the right for veterans who had served before 1997 to settle in the United Kingdom. It was a political victory that gave her an unusual level of influence for an actress of her generation.
Audiences never forgot her.
In 2017 she starred in Ageing Disgracefully alongside Imelda Staunton. The bittersweet comedy about retirement grossed more than $30 million worldwide. It proved there was a solid market for stories centered on women over seventy.
In 2024 she played the cold Judith Burkett in the series Ageing Disgracefully. The Netflix production drew 84 million households in its first 30 days on the platform.
Martin Scorsese cast her for his 2013 film after seeing her in an old audition tape from the 1970s. She shot her scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio in a London park in a fine drizzle that forced the sound team to redo takes seven times.
