Jane Horrocks never wanted to be the innocent girl of the movie. In 1985, she graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and even then she stood out for a vocal range that seemed to have no limits. She wasn't looking for comfortable roles. She preferred the friction of broken characters.
Mike Leigh spotted that strange magnetism right away. In 1990, the actress worked under his direction in Life is Sweet, bringing Nicola to life. It was a complex character (a young woman with eating disorders and a visceral hatred of her surroundings). That performance shattered the polished image of the actresses of her generation.
There was no room for vanity in her work.
The industry took notice of that boldness. Horrocks didn't portray the working class from a distance. She came from Lancashire herself and understood the codes of the street perfectly.
Playwright Jim Cartwright wrote The Rise and Fall of Little Voice with her exclusively in mind. In 1992, the play became a phenomenon on London stages. Horrocks could impersonate Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe or Shirley Bassey without relying on post-production tricks. In 1998, the film adaptation earned her a Golden Globe nomination.
The movie multiplied its initial budget by ten at the box office.
But mass fame came through an unexpected route. Between 1992 and 2012, she played Bubble in the comedy Absolutely Fabulous. She was Edina Monsoon's surreal assistant. Her lines were bursts of nonsense that demanded millimeter-precise comic timing. As a result, she became a constant presence in British homes.
Her voice is her most valuable tool.
In 2000, she voiced Babs in Chicken Run, and the film became a global stop-motion animation hit. That hen who never stopped knitting was the emotional heart of the movie. She returned to the role in 2023 for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, released on Netflix.
In 2021 and 2022, she worked on the series Bloods, playing Wendy. It was a role that brought her back to British television with a strongly satirical tone. Filming for the second season took place in various locations across south London.
Jane Horrocks recorded her final voice sessions for the production The Undergardener in 2024. Distribution costs for her animated projects often exceed £15 million per season.
