Keanu Charles Reeves was born in Beirut on September 2, 1964. His father was a Hawaiian-born geologist who ended up in prison for heroin trafficking. His mother worked as a costume designer for rock stars. He attended four high schools in five years and never graduated, because he preferred ice hockey to math.
In 1986, he made his film debut in Youngblood. He played a goalie on a hockey team. It wasn't a complex role, but it helped him get a foot in the door in Hollywood. He arrived in Los Angeles with a 1969 Volvo and barely three thousand dollars in his pocket. That same year he shot River's Edge, and critics began to take notice of his melancholy air.
During his early years, the industry didn't know where to place him. He had the looks of a romantic leading man but chose strange projects. In 1991, he starred in Point Break under Kathryn Bigelow's direction, and that changed how he was perceived physically on camera.
It was his first real experience with pure action cinema.
In 1994, he accepted the lead role in Speed. The film grossed 350 million dollars worldwide. Reeves refused to take part in the sequel, even though they offered him 12 million dollars at the time. He preferred to go to Winnipeg to perform Hamlet at a regional theater for a few hundred dollars a week.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1999, the world discovered Neo. The Wachowski sisters made him read philosophy treatises before filming began on The Matrix. He spent four months training in martial arts every day so he could perform the choreography without needing constant stunt doubles. The contract he signed included a clause to give part of his earnings to the special effects and costume teams.
And then everything fell apart off screen.
In 1999, his daughter was stillborn. In 2001, his partner died in a car accident. Reeves retreated into his work and into an almost nonexistent public profile. For years he lived in hotels because he didn't want to buy a house that would feel empty. During that period he shot the sequels to the sci-fi franchise and darker projects such as Constantine in 2005.
Many analysts considered his golden era over after the failure of 47 Ronin in 2013. That production cost 175 million dollars and barely recouped its initial investment. But in 2014, he released John Wick.
The film started as a small B-movie project directed by his former stunt colleagues. Reeves performed 90 percent of his own stunts. The fighting style blended judo and short-range weapon handling with a technical precision not seen in mainstream American cinema.
But the franchise's success didn't pull him away from his other passions. In 2011, he founded Arch Motorcycle to build high-end custom motorcycles. He also wrote the comic BRZRKR in 2021, which quickly reached massive sales figures in the North American market.
In 2023, the fourth installment of his assassin saga surpassed 440 million dollars at the box office. For the shoot of Ballerina in 2025, the actor returned to play the character in a supporting role. Reeves also voiced Shadow in the film Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in 2024.
His production company, Company Films, has a development deal with several platforms to adapt graphic novels and live-action projects. The estimated preproduction budget for his next suspense feature exceeds 40 million dollars.
