Ian McShane was born in Blackburn in 1942, surrounded by professional football. His father played for Manchester United, but young Ian preferred acting after studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He made his film debut in 1962 with The Wild and the Willing, playing a rebellious student.
That first role gave him immediate visibility.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, he worked nonstop in British and American productions. He appeared in Battle of Britain in 1969 and in Villain in 1971 alongside Richard Burton. But widespread recognition would take another couple of decades to arrive.
In 1986, Lovejoy premiered on the BBC. He played a roguish antiques dealer who broke the fourth wall long before it became a TV trend. The series ran until 1994 and brought him a likable fame across the United Kingdom.
And the gamble paid off.
McShane joined HBO in 2004 to bring Al Swearengen to life in the series Deadwood. The character was a violent and eloquent brothel owner who won the Golden Globe in 2005. His ability to spit out insults with terrifying elegance changed his standing in the international industry.
Before filming the episodes, he would read the script to find the rhythm of the dialogue, because series creator David Milch wrote in an almost musical and complex style. That performance allowed him to move away from mature leading-man roles and embrace much darker characters.
Television gave her the respect that film denied her.
In 2014, he accepted the role of Winston in John Wick. The owner of the Continental Hotel became a key part of the action franchise starring Keanu Reeves. He reprised the role in all the sequels, including John Wick: Chapter 4, released in 2023.
His deep voice allowed him to work steadily in animation and voice-over. He voiced the villain Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda in 2008 and took part in Coraline in 2009. As a result, his presence in popular culture expanded well beyond his physical appearance.
He appeared in the sixth season of Game of Thrones in 2016 with a brief role as a moral compass. Between 2017 and 2021, he led the cast of American Gods as the mysterious Mr. Wednesday. Filming the series was complicated by constant changes in the technical crew and writers.
In 2024, filming wrapped on the spin-off Ballerina, which was scheduled for theatrical release in 2025. His contract stipulated a base salary of several million dollars for just a few weeks of work at the Prague studios.
