Synopsis of Jesus of Nazareth

Anglo-Italian television miniseries created by Franco Zeffirelli. Robert Powell plays Jesus of Nazareth, and Olivia Hussey brings Mary to life. The story begins with the betrothal of Mary and Joseph and moves chronologically through the accounts in the four Gospels: the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Circumcision and the Flight into Egypt. The script works as a harmony of the Gospels, with a naturalistic tone that downplays special effects during the miracles. It presents a kind and compassionate Jesus. Set in the 1st century, the series airs on Rai 1 in Italy and on ITV in the United Kingdom.

Trivia about Jesus of Nazareth

The film's sets were later reused in Monty Python's religious satire Life of Brian (1979).
Powell barely blinks throughout the entire film, a deliberate choice by Zeffirelli that mirrors H.B. Warner in The King of Kings.
According to actress Koo Stark, a broken R2-D2 escaped from the Star Wars set and ended up on the set of the series.
Its first year on air drew more than 700 million viewers.
The protests led to 18,000 letters being sent to General Motors, which had contributed $3 million toward the film's cost.
Robert Powell was chosen to play Jesus by Kathie Grade, wife of producer Lew Grade, after she saw him in the TV adaptation of Jude the Obscure, and not by Franco Zeffirelli.
Tom Courtenay was initially announced as the lead, while the planned cast included Alan Bates as Herod, Dustin Hoffman as Judas, Burt Lancaster as Caiaphas and Peter O'Toole as John the Baptist.
Before filming the crucifixion, Robert Powell spent twelve days on a cheese-only diet to appear physically gaunt.
