Every ant has its day.

Z is a neurotic, insecure worker ant who lives in an anthill of millions. He was born to work in the colony, but he constantly complains about his tasks and how little he matters in such a huge place. His friend Azteca listens to his complaints and doesn't take them seriously. At the other end of the anthill, Princess Bala grows tired of a monotonous, boring life, while her mother, the queen, insists she must take on her role like any other ant. Both feel that the place they've been given is too small for them. The movie is directed by Eric Darnell and Tim Johnson, and Woody Allen voices the lead character, whose personality shares some facial features with the actor.

Trivia about Antz

Sarah Jessica Parker was originally chosen to voice Princess Bala and even recorded some lines. She was later fired and replaced by Sharon Stone.

According to DreamWorks, the budget was around $42 million, although figures of $60 and $105 million were also reported. According to the Los Angeles Times, the industry doubted the first figure.

Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted Hans Zimmer to compose the music, but Zimmer's commitments to The Prince of Egypt led him to propose his protégés Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell instead.

The movie's opening weekend beat Stargate as the biggest October opening weekend. That record lasted two years, until Meet the Parents broke it in 2000.

Antz was the first full-length computer-animated film available on DVD, in March 1999.

DreamWorks went as far as developing a direct-to-video sequel, which was also planned for a possible theatrical release, but the project was eventually canceled.

The movie grossed approximately $90.8 million in the United States and $81 million in other territories, for a total worldwide close to $171.8 million.
