Sharon Stone arrived in New York with just over sixty dollars and a determination that bordered on insolence. She was 1977. She came from Meadville, Pennsylvania, escaping a gray future in a library or a post office to try her luck in modeling.
In 1980, she made her film debut alongside Woody Allen in Recollections. She didn't say a single word. Her face through a train window was enough for the industry to note her name on casting lists for supporting actresses.
For a decade, she piled up roles in action films and comedies that no one remembers. But everything changed when Paul Verhoeven cast her as Basic Instinct in 1992. Ten other leading actresses had turned down the role of Catherine Tramell because of its sexual edge.
And the gamble paid off.
She was paid 500,000 dollars compared to 14 million for Michael Douglas. That pay gap didn't stop her from taking over the film and the public conversation for years. The famous leg crossing in the interrogation room was shot without her knowing exactly what would appear on screen.
In 1995, she earned her true professional breakthrough with Casino. Martin Scorsese gave her the role of Ginger McKenna, and she responded with an electrifying performance. She won the Golden Globe and earned her only Oscar nomination.
But the industry didn't make things easy for her afterward.
In 2001, she suffered a massive brain hemorrhage that kept her out of the spotlight for nearly a decade. She lost the ability to read, walk and remember her lines. That recovery was an process invisible to the public but devastating for her finances and her standing in Hollywood.
Because in this business, health is a taboo that gets paid for with being forgotten. Stone had to accept minor roles in television and B-movies to pay the bills. So her comeback was slow and full of bureaucratic and personal obstacles.
The industry forgot her quickly.
In 2018, she worked with Steven Soderbergh on the series Mosaic. It was a narrative experiment that proved her presence was still magnetic without relying on the tricks of her youth. In 2020, she shot Ratched for Netflix under the direction of Ryan Murphy.
Painting became her main refuge starting in 2023. She exhibited her work at the C. Parker gallery in Greenwich, Connecticut, selling canvases for figures that exceeded 30,000 dollars. Her work as a painter gave her the independence the studios had denied her.
In 2024, her participation in the sequel to Nobody alongside Bob Odenkirk was confirmed. Filming was scheduled for the summer of that same year in Winnipeg with a production budget of 30 million dollars.
