Synopsis of The Residence

Cordelia Cupp, an eccentric detective, arrives at the White House to solve a murder that takes place during a state dinner. The investigation moves through the residence's various rooms and also its less visible areas, where 157 staff members work. As the case unfolds, conflicts begin to arise among the staff, who live under the same roof. Created by Paul William Davies for Netflix, the series stars Uzo Aduba, with Giancarlo Esposito and Molly Griggs in the main cast. The detective will have to move among all of them while continuing to ask questions.

Trivia about The Residence

Netflix announced the project in July 2018 as part of a deal with Shondaland, and both parties acquired the rights to a nonfiction book about the White House.

The set recreated the White House with 132 rooms spread across seven soundstages and 20,800 square feet, the largest replica of the presidential residence.

Andre Braugher died on December 11, 2023, and the role went to Giancarlo Esposito when production resumed in February 2024.

Julian McMahon, who plays a fictional Australian prime minister, is the son of former prime minister William McMahon.

Netflix canceled "The Residence" after a single season; the decision was announced in July 2025, leaving the series without a second season.

During its first week, the series reached 6.4 million views and 49.5 million hours viewed, and ranked second on Netflix's global and U.S. charts.

"The Residence" received an Emmy nomination for Uzo Aduba as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, despite being canceled after one season.
