Stacy Keach doesn't have the face of a textbook leading man. He was born in Savannah in 1941 and grew up with a cleft lip that ended up giving him an imposing physical presence on screen.
His training is academic and deep. He studied at Berkeley and the Yale School of Drama before crossing the Atlantic to refine his craft at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
And that classical foundation allowed him to move from Shakespeare to film noir without missing a beat.
In 1966 he made his Off-Broadway debut in MacBird!, and New York audiences realized this guy wasn't just passing through. The industry truly discovered him in 1972. John Huston cast him to star in Fat City, and the role of a washed-up boxer fit him like a glove.
It was a tough shoot. Keach projected a vulnerability that few actors of his generation dared to show on screen.
But the general public inevitably associates him with the trench coat from Mike Hammer. The series premiered in 1984 and made him a familiar face in living rooms across half the world.
Fame brought excesses. In 1984, British police arrested him at Heathrow Airport with a considerable amount of cocaine.
The judge showed no mercy. He served six months in prison at Reading Prison, and that episode abruptly halted his progress in Hollywood.
That was the end of his days as an absolute star.
After leaving prison, he had to reinvent himself as a top-tier supporting actor. In 1998 he appeared in American History X, playing a white supremacist with a coldness that made your skin crawl.
His voice is one of the most in-demand in the United States. He has narrated documentaries for National Geographic and series such as American Greed since 2007.
In 2019, he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was a belated recognition for a man who has appeared in more than two hundred productions over his lifetime.
And he keeps working without looking back.
In 2021, he played Robert Vesco on The Blacklist for several episodes. The shoot took place in New York under strict health protocols that limited the number of people allowed on set.
