Richard Thomas was born among ballet shoes in Manhattan in 1951. His parents danced with the New York City Ballet, and he ran around the dressing rooms before he could read. He made his Broadway debut at seven in Sunrise at Campobello, playing the son of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The set was her natural habitat.
In 1969, he filmed Last Summer alongside Barbara Hershey. It was a raw film about the end of adolescence, nothing like the clean-cut image he would project years later. But before turning twenty, he already knew what it was like to work with top-tier directors.
In 1972, The Waltons premiered and his life changed completely. He won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1973 at just 22 years old. Nearly six million viewers followed his adventures every week on CBS, and his face became a fixture in living rooms across the country.
But television fame is a gilded cage. Richard left the series in 1977 to pursue roles that didn't feel like farm life and a close-knit family. He wanted to break free of the image of the good, sensitive boy who writes in his diary under a desk lamp.
The industry was cruel to his departure.
In 1979, he starred in the television version of All Quiet on the Western Front. It was a serious attempt to prove he could truly suffer on camera in a war setting. And although critics respected it, audiences still saw the young man from Virginia in him.
In 1990, he led the cast of the first adaptation of IT by Stephen King. He played Bill Denbrough in its adult version, facing off against Pennywise the clown. It was a ratings hit that allowed him to move into gender-bending roles without losing the respect of his peers.
The theater was always his safe haven.
Maturity brought him his best opportunities in the streaming market. In 2013, he joined the cast of The Americans to bring FBI agent Frank Gaad to life. His portrayal of a bureaucrat overwhelmed by events during the Cold War was an exercise in restraint.
In 2021, he appeared in the film The Unforgivable alongside Sandra Bullock. He played a lawyer guarding a house caught in a legal dispute. That same year, his participation in the final season of Ozark was confirmed, where he played Wendy Byrde's father.
Between 2022 and 2024, he toured the United States with the stage production of To Kill a Mockingbird, playing Atticus Finch. Aaron Sorkin wrote the screenplay for this adaptation, which grossed millions in every city. The tour officially ended in 2024 after visiting more than 40 different theaters.
