Claude Joséphine Rose Cardinale won the Miss Tunisia beauty contest in 1957 without ever entering. Her sister pushed her onto the stage, and the prize was a trip to the Venice Film Festival. There, Italian producers chased her across the Lido sands while she only thought about going home to finish her teacher training.
Franco Cristaldi saw in her a gold mine and tied her to a seven-year exclusive contract. She couldn't cut her hair, gain weight or get married without his prior permission. She hid her pregnancy for months out of fear of the termination clauses, and presented her son Patrick as if he were her younger brother for almost a decade.
The industry molded her into a silent object of desire.
Because her Italian was shaky and her voice sounded too husky for the standards of the time, directors decided to dub her in all her early films. But her physical presence was so striking that European audiences soon demanded to see her on screen more and more often.
In 1963 she worked simultaneously for Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. By day she was the ethereal muse of 8½, and by evening she became the ambitious bourgeois woman of Il Gattopardo. Visconti wanted her dark-haired and Fellini preferred her blonde, so she had to dye her hair every two weeks to meet the demands of both geniuses.
It was at that point that she found her true voice. Fellini insisted that her deep tone was a key part of her magnetism and forbade her from being dubbed in the final cut.
She never wanted to be a star.
Despite that supposed lack of ambition, Sergio Leone gave her the only female role with real weight in Once Upon a Time in the West in 1968. Her character, Jill McBain, served as the center of gravity in a story of tough men and gunpowder. She was paid significantly less than her male co-stars despite being the film's absolute lead.
Her relationship with Cristaldi ended when she met director Pasquale Squitieri. She broke her restrictive contract, left the protection of the powerful Italian producer, and moved to France to start over. In Hollywood, she made The Pink Panther and The Professionals, but she always preferred the work pace of European studios.
And the gamble paid off.
During the seventies and eighties, she moved away from the sex symbol image to pursue roles with more dramatic weight. In 1982, she filmed Fitzcarraldo under director Werner Herzog in the middle of the Amazon jungle. She endured a hellish shoot marked by the director's delusions and Klaus Kinski's instability without complaining once.
In 2022 she starred in L'isola del perdono, a production shot in Tunisia under the direction of Ridha Behi. She plays a woman who returns to her roots in a story that closes a seven-decade professional career in front of the camera. Her filmography exceeds 150 titles spread across three continents.
She has lived in Paris for years, and her most notable recent public appearance was at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
