Synopsis of The Pillars of the Earth

The series is set in Kingsbridge, a fictional town in England, during the 12th century. At its core is the construction of a cathedral in the town, a project that progresses as the country goes through The Anarchy, one of the most turbulent periods in its history. Residents and builders are swept up in the tensions of those years, and the religious project becomes the center of the plot. The miniseries is an adaptation of Ken Follett's novel of the same name. It was created by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan and aired on Starz. Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell and Matthew Macfadyen lead the cast of this eight-episode production.

Trivia about The Pillars of the Earth

The miniseries took nearly a year to produce and cost $40 million, funded by several production companies from Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The premiere aired simultaneously on Starz and Encore and drew 690,000 viewers in total, with 423,000 on Starz and 267,000 on Encore.
The series received three nominations at the 68th Golden Globe Awards, and Ian McShane and Hayley Atwell were nominated for acting.
Several timelines of The Anarchy were altered or invented for the series, and one critic felt that the show took great liberties with the real history.
The final aerial shot shows today's Salisbury with a computer-generated cathedral that blends elements of Salisbury and Wells cathedrals.
Filming took place in Austria and Hungary during 2009, at locations that stood in for the medieval England depicted in the story.
The miniseries won the Emmy for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Miniseries, Movie or Special at the 2011 ceremony for the episode "The Work of Angels."
Starz acquired the U.S. rights in the spring of 2010, following the success of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," although the production had already come from Germany and Canada.
