Virgil Oldman is a highly respected art expert and auctioneer, a solitary man who keeps others at a distance and devotes his life to work. His professional reputation is beyond question. One day he receives a call from a young woman who wants to sell the antiques collection she inherited from her parents. Trivia about The Best Offer

Tornatore wrote the screenplay in English to broaden the film's international appeal. It was also his debut as a director and screenwriter in that language.

Sylvia Hoeks landed the female lead after other actresses turned it down. Her character barely appears on screen for much of the film.

Filming began in Trieste on April 30, 2012, in the same city where Tornatore had shot The Stranger (2006).

Tornatore described Geoffrey Rush as a blend of two great Italian and American actors, after having imagined him while writing the screenplay.

In Spain, the film grossed 2.4 million dollars, one of its best figures outside Italy.

In the United Kingdom, it was released under the title Deception, distributed by Momentum Pictures.

The film won six David di Donatello Awards in 2013, out of thirteen nominations, and six Nastri d'Argento that same year, out of nine nominations.

Ennio Morricone's music was recorded in Prague with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra; the film grossed 100,035 dollars in the United States and Canada.
