In 1994, Sandra Bullock drove an out-of-control bus through the freeways of Los Angeles. That role in Speed was not designed for her, but it ended up saving the movie and her own bank account. Before that release, she was a supporting actress looking for a foothold in low-budget productions in New York.
The daughter of a German opera singer and an American military officer, Bullock spent half her childhood in Europe. She studied acting in North Carolina and then moved to the big city to wait tables while going to auditions. No one expected her to reach the top of the industry because her look didn't fit the femme fatale mold that dominated the nineties.
But Jan de Bont came along with an action script, and she brought the humor it was missing. In 1995, she filmed While You Were Sleeping and proved she could carry a romantic comedy without the help of big special effects.
And the gamble paid off.
Unlike many of her generation, she understood early on that real power lay behind the desk. She founded her own production company, Fortis Films, in 1995. Her sister Gesine handled the legal side, and together they began developing projects that major studios had rejected as too lightweight for the taste of the time.
Producing Miss Congeniality in 2000 brought her massive returns. The film cost 45 million dollars and ended up grossing more than 200 million worldwide. She controlled every dollar of the promotion and decided that her character should be clumsy rather than glamorous to connect with real women.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
During the first decade of the 2000s, she took on several projects that didn't quite connect at the box office. But in 2009, she accepted the role of Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side after turning it down up to three times. That decision earned her the Oscar for Best Actress in 2010 and changed how critics viewed her work.
Ironically, that same week she won a Razzie for Worst Actress for All About Steve. She went to pick it up in person, bringing a cart full of DVD copies for the voters in the room. That sense of the absurd is her greatest commercial asset with an audience that feels close to her.
In 2013, she starred in Gravity under the direction of Alfonso Cuarón. She spent months locked in a light box to simulate the loneliness of space, while George Clooney appeared on screen for just a few minutes. The film grossed 723 million dollars at the box office and once again made her the highest-paid actress in the world, according to the Forbes list of 2014.
She later tried her luck in the digital market. In 2018, Bird Box premiered on Netflix and broke viewing records during its first month on air. The psychological horror story connected with an audience that no longer flocked to traditional movie theaters en masse.
In 2022, she decided to step back after the premiere of The Lost City. She said she needed to be at home and step away from the pace of filming for an indefinite period. Her net worth exceeds 250 million dollars after three decades of nonstop work in the industry.
Her last credited appearance in a big-budget production was a brief cameo in Bullet Train that same year.
