Just Focus on Surviving

Malorie Hayes gives her two young children very serious instructions before climbing into a rowboat with them. The rule is strict: they must never remove their blindfolds, because if they do, they will die. As the boat drifts down the current, Malorie tries to stay calm and guide the children down a river that offers no second chances. Her goal is to reach a place that seems safe, even though the path is uncertain and any sound could become a threat. Sandra Bullock leads the cast of this movie directed by Susanne Bier.

Trivia about Bird Box

In December 2019, Reznor criticized the producers for using his music and that of Atticus Ross, and the editor for a mix that was too low. He called the experience a "fucking waste of time."

In July 2020, Netflix revealed that the movie had been watched by 89 million households in its first four weeks, the second-highest figure for one of its original films.

Bird Box became Netflix's most-watched movie in its first 28 days of release, with 282.02 million hours viewed. It held that spot until 2021.

The film originally used footage of the Lac-Mégantic train disaster, which killed 47 people in 2013. Netflix later replaced it with a discarded shot from a canceled American TV series.

The crew used real birds during filming as much as possible and replaced them digitally in the scenes where they flapped their wings.

The spin-off sequel "Bird Box Barcelona" premiered on Netflix on July 14, 2023, with a new cast and a story set on a parallel timeline to the original movie.

Part of the shoot took place along the Smith River in Northern California; the production mobilized some 350 people across Humboldt and Del Norte counties.

"Bird Box" received a Visual Effects Society nomination for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature at the ceremony held on February 5, 2019.
