Jacki Weaver was 63 years old when the world discovered she could be terrifying. It was in 2010 with the release of Animal Kingdom. Before that moment she was already an institution in Australia, but outside its borders almost no one remembered her name.

David Michôd handed her the role of Janine "Smurf" Cody. She was the mother of criminals who cooked while deciding who should die. That performance earned her first Oscar nomination and permanently changed her standing in the industry.

A late bloomer.

In 1975 she took part in Picnic at Hanging Rock under the direction of Peter Weir. She was part of the new Australian wave and worked tirelessly in local theater and television for decades. Yet the international market ignored her systematically until she turned sixty.

The Assault on California's Studios

In 2012, David O. Russell cast her in Silver Linings Playbook. She played Bradley Cooper's mother and earned her second Oscar nomination in just three years. At that stage of her life, Weaver wasn't chasing fame.

And luck had nothing to do with it.

The actress prefers roles where the character hides something dark behind a friendly facade. In 2013 she worked on Stoker with Nicole Kidman, and in 2014 she joined the cast of the series Gracepoint. Her technique relies on economy of gestures and a gaze that often says the opposite of what the script does.

Because Weaver understands that her audience is intelligent. She doesn't need to underline emotions or exaggerate drama for viewers to feel the tension in the room.

In 2018 she appeared in the hit Bird Box. Three years later, in 2021, she joined the series Yellowstone to bring Caroline Warner to life. There she displayed a corporate coldness reminiscent of her best film noir villains.

Longevity as a Strategy

Many actors of her generation retire, but she increased her workload as she turned seventy-five. In 2022 she shot American Murderer and Wildflower, showing that her name guaranteed stability in mid-budget productions.

So she moved to the United States to avoid constant transatlantic travel.

In 2023 she appeared in the science fiction series Hello Tomorrow! for Apple TV+. She shot ten episodes on location in New York, playing Barbara Porter. Filming stretched over several months under a strict production schedule.

Her role in the movie The Six Triple Eight in 2024 ended with a contract that included a confidentiality clause about her base salary. Filming wrapped in March that year after several weeks of work in the United Kingdom.
