Alison Brie isn't your typical method actor. Her training in classical California theater gave her a technical foundation she later applied to sitcom comedy. In 2007, she landed the role of Trudy Campbell in Mad Men. It was a supporting role that demanded absolute restraint in every shot.
At the same time, she was filming Community. Playing Annie Edison required opposite energy, since the show's pace was frantic. That ability to jump from one set to another defined her first decade in the industry. She worked on both productions simultaneously for years without the audience noticing the physical exhaustion.
The duality was exhausting.
But mass recognition didn't come from her talent for period drama. In 2009, NBC premiered the college comedy that put her on the global map. Brie quickly realized that control over her career depended on not getting stuck in the role of the girl next door.
In 2017, the Netflix platform premiered GLOW. The shoot required months of physical training to learn professional wrestling holds. Brie played Ruth Wilder and fully moved away from the polished image of her early career. She trained with real wrestlers to perform her own stunts in the ring.
And the gamble paid off.
Because after three successful seasons, she decided that acting was no longer enough. In 2020, she co-wrote and starred in Horse Girl to explore mental health issues from a personal perspective. It was her first major step toward total authorship in independent film. The script grew out of her own family anxieties and broke away from Hollywood's conventional narrative structures.
Before shooting Spin Me Round in 2022, she returned to producing. The film was shot in Italy on a tight budget. Brie supervised the casting and tone of the movie to make sure the dark comedy didn't get lost in the final cut.
The creative collaboration with her husband Dave Franco resulted in Somebody I Used to Know in 2023. Brie not only starred in the story but also took part in every stage of preproduction. They wrote the script during lockdown to avoid the creative paralysis that hit much of the industry.
In 2024, she appeared in the series Apples Never Fall, based on the novel by Liane Moriarty. The project, shot in Australia, brought her back to family drama with a touch of suspense. Still, her interest in large-scale projects hasn't disappeared entirely.
She accepted the role of Evil-Lyn in the new version of Masters of the Universe, set for release in 2026. The production has a budget of more than $100 million and will be shot mainly on locations in Oregon.
