Synopsis of Mad Men

Mad Men follows the life of a New York advertising agency located on Madison Avenue during the 1960s. Its protagonist is Don Draper, one of the best ad men at Sterling Cooper, a self-assured man at the office who hides a past he shares with no one. Around him move his family, coworkers and rivals, all eager to get ahead in an industry undergoing a dramatic transformation. What the first episode sets up is how long Draper can keep up his facade without everything he has built falling apart, while those around him try to gain ground within the agency. Created by Matthew Weiner and airing on AMC, the series stars Jon Hamm.

Trivia about Mad Men

It was the first basic cable series to win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, doing so in each of its first four seasons, between 2008 and 2011.

HBO was interested in the pilot script but insisted that David Chase serve as executive producer. Chase turned down the job, and the network let the series slip away.

In 2017, HBO executive Richard Plepler called it "unforgivable" to have passed on Mad Men, which he considered his biggest regret at the network.

The episodes after the pilot weren't shot in New York but at Los Angeles Center Studios, where they were filmed after the opening episode.

Each episode cost between 2 and 2.5 million dollars, and the pilot's budget exceeded 3 million.

Apple Corps authorized the use of "Tomorrow Never Knows" by The Beatles in the fifth-season episode "Lady Lazarus" for about 250,000 dollars, paid by Lionsgate.

The opening credits ranked number 9 on a TV Guide readers' list of the ten best TV opening title sequences in 2010.

Matthew Weiner brought much of the technical crew from his film «Are You Here» to «Mad Men», including the director of photography, the editor, the casting team, the production designer and the composer.
