Harry Hamlin never set out to be a poster boy when he studied drama at Yale. He had classical training and a jawline Hollywood was not going to waste. In 1981 he starred in Clash of the Titans, and the world saw him as the natural heir to the stars of the 1950s.
He took the lead role in Bent Bow in 1982, playing a married man who falls in love with another man. It was a suicidal move for the time, because agents in town believed it would end any chance of becoming a commercial actor.
And he almost did.
For several years, the phone stopped ringing as often as it used to. But Hamlin did not regret that decision, because he was looking for complex characters, not simple magazine profiles. Television ended up being his refuge and his definitive launching pad.
In 1986 he donned the suit of Michael Kuzak in L.A. Law. The series stayed on the air until 1991 and gave him a visibility that film had denied him after his early experiments. In 1987 People magazine named him the sexiest man alive.
Hamlin never took that title too seriously. He preferred to talk about his training at the American Conservatory Theater rather than his tabloid cover stories. But that fame allowed him to choose projects with a freedom that few actors of his generation truly enjoyed.
The industry is fickle.
After leaving the legal series in 1991, he went through a phase of supporting roles and TV movies that did not always match his talent. But in 2013 he won back critical respect with his performance as Jim Cutler in Mad Men. He appeared in 15 episodes and showed that his maturity as an actor was far more interesting than his youth.
Away from the spotlight, Hamlin devotes much of his time to science. He is an active investor in TAE Technologies and has spent decades advocating for nuclear fusion as a global energy solution. It's not your typical Hollywood star hobby.
In 2023 he joined Anne Rice's universe with the series Mayfair Witches. He played Cortland Mayfair, and his presence brought veteran weight to a production full of visual effects and supernatural drama. He keeps working with astonishing consistency for someone who started under the traditional studio system.
Consistency is her greatest asset.
In 2024 he took part in the shoot of the comedy In the Lost Lands, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. The budget for his first major film in 1981 was $15 million.
