Maggie Siff rarely raises her voice. In an industry that rewards theatrics, she prefers silence charged with intention. Her face became familiar to the general public in 2007 when she appeared in the first season of Mad Men as Rachel Menken.
It was a brief role, but enough for Matthew Weiner to change his view of the weight women carry in the series.
And the gamble paid off.
She was born in the Bronx in 1974. Before stepping onto a film set, she spent years touring regional theaters in Philadelphia and New York. In 1998, she won a Barrymore Award for her work in Oleanna. That classical training gave her a technical foundation that many television actors envy.
But television has other rhythms.
In 2004, she had her first on-camera experience in an episode of Third Watch. Brief appearances followed in shows such as Law & Order and Grey’s Anatomy. They were paycheck jobs while she kept looking for projects that demanded more than a pretty face in front of the camera.
In 2008, she accepted the role of Tara Knowles in Sons of Anarchy. Over six seasons, she played a woman caught between her career as a pediatric surgeon and the violence of a motorcycle club. Siff handled that tension with surgical coolness that kept the character from sliding into victimhood.
In 2013, her character had a violent exit that left audiences in shock.
Siff filmed her last scene on the show in complete secrecy to avoid leaks to the trade press. After leaving California, she returned to independent film. In 2013, she starred in Concussion, a movie that explored female desire from a raw perspective rarely seen in American mainstream cinema.
Because Siff knows that power doesn't need to shout.
The year 2016 brought Wendy Rhoades. In Billions, she plays a corporate psychologist who serves as the moral anchor of a multimillion-dollar hedge fund. Within the story, her character earns five million dollars a year for keeping the Wall Street sharks mentally stable.
This is a role where restraint is her greatest weapon. The series ended in 2023 after seven seasons, with Siff standing out as the only celebrity able to bring the male leads to heel without using physical force.
But not all of her work was big-budget television.
In 2019, she appeared in the film The Short History of the Long Road, and in 2017 she joined the cast of One Percent More Humid. These are small projects that the actress tends to take on when the script offers nuances that major TV networks often overlook.
In 2024, she voiced the audio project The Weird and kept her permanent residence in Brooklyn. Her per-episode salary during the final seasons of her longest TV contract exceeded 350,000 dollars.
