Hana Mae Lee wasn't looking for the Hollywood spotlight when she arrived in Los Angeles. Her plan centered on fashion design and illustration after graduating from the Otis College of Art and Design. But fate has strange ways of showing up.
Before speaking a single word in front of a professional camera, she was already dressing music stars. Her personal brand, Hanamahn, was born from that need to create volume and textures that the conventional textile industry ignored.
In 2012, she landed the role that broke her anonymity. Lilly Onakuramara in Dando la nota was a character designed to go unnoticed, and she ended up stealing every scene with unintelligible whispers. No one on set expected a nearly silent actress to make such a box office impact.
And the gamble paid off.
Her work in the horror genre was no technical accident. Lee's gaze has a still quality that casting directors knew how to use to build tension. In 2017, she played Sonya in The Babysitter under the direction of McG. Here she blended her visual fashion heritage with dry, choreographed violence.
She reprised the role in 2020 in the sequel The Babysitter: Killer Queen. Because Lee understands that physicality is a work tool beyond conventional beauty. Her characters often live in an uncomfortable space between comedy and horror.
The industry often typecasts performers of Korean descent in very specific roles. But she chose to break that pattern by taking part in projects such as the series Patriot in 2017 and the comedy Superstore. Her salary rose exponentially after appearing in three different franchises in less than a decade.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
In 2021, she shot Habit alongside Bella Thorne, a project that aimed to provoke through religious aesthetics. By then, Lee was already spending half her time on executive producing and developing her own scripts. The camera was no longer her only goal in life.
Her background in design allows her to oversee the costumes of her own characters on many occasions. This level of total control over her image is rare among actresses who started out in teen comedy. So her move into independent film was a natural step.
During 2023 and 2024, she focused her efforts on developing content that moves beyond California's racial stereotypes. The Asian American market generates billions of dollars a year, and she knows how to attract that audience without falling into caricature.
In 2021, the film Habit had an estimated budget of 2 million dollars.
