Synopsis of Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story

In Fall River, Massachusetts, during the summer of 1892, the Borden family lives through a tragedy inside their own home. Andrew and Abby Borden are brutally murdered with an axe, and the gaze of the police and the press quickly turns to their daughter Lizzie, played by Ella Beatty. She is the prime suspect in the crimes, and the series revolves around the pressure of a community that needs a culprit. Rebecca Hall plays Abby, while Charlie Hunnam brings Andrew to life. Ian Brennan created this story for Netflix, the platform where the season streams, and the central conflict arises from the clash between the suspect and an environment that watches her without compromise.

Trivia about Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story

The season was the lowest-debuting entry in the anthology, yet it reached No. 1 on Netflix's global weekly chart with 12.1 million views in its first four days.

In its second week, it added 14.5 million views, up 20% from the previous week, though it still trails the second-week numbers of its predecessors.

This is the first season of the anthology centered on a female protagonist, and also the first that is not set primarily in the 20th century.

Ian Brennan wrote all eight episodes of the season and explained that focusing on Borden gave him the opportunity to explore sexism and gender inequality.

Ella Beatty, Rebecca Hall and Vicky Krieps joined the cast in July 2025, and Charlie Hunnam joined the ensemble in September.

Principal photography began in Los Angeles in September 2025 and wrapped in March 2026.

Brennan described the anthology's central theme as "monsters are made, not born," an idea suggesting that Borden's education and circumstances shaped the series' perspective.

Vicky Krieps also plays Countess Erzsébet Báthory in scenes set in Italy, shot at the end of the production schedule for planning reasons.
