Sarah Paulson was born in Tampa but grew up in New York, eating hot dogs in Central Park while dreaming of Broadway. In 1994, she landed her first professional role in a Horton Foote play. She was nineteen years old and had no guarantee the phone would ring again.
During the nineties, she picked up supporting roles in TV series that nobody remembers today. She worked on American Gothic and had a brief role in Law & Order. She wasn't the It girl. She was a supporting actress that casting directors kept in their notebooks in case the lead of the moment fell through.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2011, she accepted a three-episode role in the first season of American Horror Story. No one suspected that this contract would turn into a collaboration spanning more than a decade. Paulson played conjoined twins, a spectral drug addict and a coven leader in the same horror anthology.
Filming Freak Show in 2014 was a technical ordeal for her. She had to act opposite a replica of her own head to play the Tattler sisters, Dot and Bette. It took fifteen hours of filming a day to achieve a visual effect that today would be handled with a cheap digital filter.
But her real triumph came with a courtroom reality. In 2016, she put on Marcia Clark's curly wig for The People v. O. J. Simpson. She spent weeks listening to recordings of the original trial to nail the prosecutor's vocal tone. She won the Emmy after five previous nominations that didn't pay off.
That award was no gift.
Following the success of the series about the trial of the decade, she shot Ocean’s 8 in 2018. She shared the screen with Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock in a project designed to blow up the summer box office. But Paulson was more interested in creative control than in the glitter of the red carpet.
In 2020, she premiered Ratched, where she not only acted but also served as executive producer. She controlled every shot and every costume choice to bring to life the most famous nurse in American literature. The series drew 48 million viewers in its first four weeks on air.
Paulson prefers the sweat of the stage to the makeup of TV sets.
In 2023, she returned to Broadway in the play Appropriate. New York critics applauded her portrayal of Toni, a woman who uncovers dark family secrets after her father's death. For this role, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in 2024.
In 2024, she starred in the horror thriller Hold Your Breath for Hulu. The shoot took place in desert locations where the real dust made it hard for the crew to breathe. The production used industrial fans to simulate sandstorms on a closed set in New Mexico.
