The Authority of the New York Stage

Cherry Jones doesn't need the camera to move in close to fill the frame. In 1995, she won her first Tony Award for The Heiress and made it clear that her voice had a natural power that is hard to replicate. She is an actress rooted in pure, hardcore theater.

Born in Tennessee in 1956, she trained at Carnegie Mellon. Before stepping onto a television set, she spent decades honing her voice and gestures on Broadway. Her technique is built on absolute control of silence and a physical presence that commands respect without ever needing to raise her voice.

That first major recognition was no stroke of luck. She had spent years working in regional companies and founded the American Repertory Theater. For her, the craft always mattered more than quick fame.

The stage was her real school.

For years, she turned down Hollywood offers so she wouldn't leave the stage. But the film and television industry eventually came knocking with roles that demanded a maturity few actresses could bring. In 1999, she appeared in The Cradle Will Rock under the direction of Tim Robbins.

Home Invasion

Many viewers in Spain didn't recognize her face until quite late. It was in 2009 that she took on the role of President Allison Taylor in the series 24. That character projected an almost icy integrity that contrasted with the violence of the plot.

And the gamble paid off.

She won an Emmy for that work in 2009. Her move to television was not a commercial surrender but an expansion of her range. In the series Awake from 2012, she played a psychiatrist with a restraint that carried much of the story's dramatic weight.

Her real breakthrough on streaming platforms came years later. In 2018, she joined the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale to play Holly, the protagonist's mother. She won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for a role that needed only a handful of episodes to become unforgettable.

Television came about at someone else's urging.

In 2019, she joined the second season of Succession. Her portrayal of Nan Pierce, the matriarch of a rival media dynasty, was an exercise in elegance and passive-aggressive disdain. She shot those scenes at a Hamptons mansion over several days of intense natural light.

Film and Long-Running Projects

On the big screen, her appearances are selective and measured. In 2021, she played Rachel LaVey in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. She worked alongside Jessica Chastain on a shoot that required a delicate balance between realism and the aesthetic excess of the 1980s.

She takes on roles where the script has clear literary weight. So it's no surprise to see her in Apple TV+ projects like the series Extrapolations from 2023. In this production, she shared the cast with major industry names to tackle climate collapse from a dramatic perspective.

Her personal life has never been a secret or a publicity tool. In 1995, she was one of the first leading actresses to thank her female partner in an award speech. She did it so naturally that it defused any sensationalism from the press of the time.

In 2024, she still lives in New York and chooses her projects with enviable calm. She has earned five Tony Award nominations over the course of her career. Her contract for the series Succession included a specific clause about private transportation between the set and her home.
