Don't let them see that color, it attracts them. Never enter the woods, that's where they wait. Heed the warning bell, it means they're coming

A small rural town in Pennsylvania lives in fear of creatures that inhabit the forests surrounding it. Its residents, simple people who live with great austerity, have learned to coexist with a list of rules that allow no exceptions. They must not let the creatures see the color red, because it attracts them. They must also stay away from the thicket, where the creatures wait. When the warning bell rings, the whole community knows danger is near. The film, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, shows this isolated community, with watchtowers and posts holding oil lamps surrounding its perimeter. The cast includes Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix and Adrien Brody.

Trivia about The Village

The film was originally titled The Woods, but the title was changed because director Lucky McKee had another film with that name in production, from 2006.
The publisher Simon & Schuster, which released the young adult novel Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix in 1995, claimed the film took ideas from the book.
The film's village was built entirely in a field on the outskirts of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and a temporary sound stage was set up in an adjacent field.
The score was composed by James Newton Howard and features solo violinist Hilary Hahn.

  • Papa, I cannot see his color.
  • [approaching students who have found slain animal] What manner of spectacle has attracted your attention so splendidly I ought carry it in my pocket to help me teach?
  • Who'll pinch me to wake me up? Who will laugh at me when I fall? Whose breath will I listen for so that I may sleep? Whose hand will I hold so that I may walk?
  • What goes on in that head of yours? Say something Lucius.
