Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan was born in Mahé (India) in 1970, but his emotional geography is limited to the residential neighborhoods of Philadelphia. In 1999, he released The Sixth Sense on a budget of $40 million. The film multiplied that figure by seventeen at the global box office.
The world thought it had found the heir to Spielberg.
That early success gave him almost absolute power in Hollywood studios. In 2000, he shot Unbreakable (a deconstruction of the superhero myth) long before the genre flooded movie theaters. His style was built on static shots and a slow-burning tension.
But his obsession with the twist ending began to work against him. With Signs in 2002 and The Village in 2004, audiences started looking for the trick before the story. And critics turned hostile.
In 2006, he released Lady in the Water. It marked the start of a free fall that nearly ended his career at the major studios.
For a decade the director took on projects that did not feel like his own. In 2010 he directed The Last Airbender, and in 2013 After Earth with Will Smith. These were gigantic productions where his personality disappeared among mediocre digital effects.
He lost the favor of the press and producers. So he decided to radically change his business model. He mortgaged his own house to finance his next films and regain the creative control he had lost.
In 2015, he returned to low-budget filmmaking with The Visit. The film cost barely five million dollars. It worked because it returned to the roots of psychological suspense without relying on expensive gimmicks.
Financial independence restored his rhythm.
Shyamalan found that owning his own negatives was more profitable. In 2016 he released Split and brought back a wild James McAvoy. The story connected with the Unbreakable universe and closed an unexpected trilogy in 2019 with the release of Glass.
In 2021, he shot Old on a beach in the Dominican Republic. The shoot faced hurricanes and strict health protocols, but production never stopped. Shyamalan prefers the controlled risk of his personal investments to the scrutiny of executives in Los Angeles.
He kept exploring confinement and paranoia with Knock at the Cabin in 2023. He adapted Paul Tremblay's novel, removing the most ambiguous elements of the original book. The result was a chamber film that grossed 54 million dollars worldwide.
In 2024, he released Trap (a thriller set at a pop concert). The film stars Josh Hartnett and his daughter Saleka Shyamalan. The budget was estimated at 30 million dollars, entirely funded by his production company Blinding Edge Pictures.
The director keeps his base in Pennsylvania, far from the noise of the California film industry. He still shoots on 35mm film whenever the budget allows. His distribution deal with Warner Bros. Pictures, signed in 2023, ensures his stories will reach theaters before streaming platforms.
