Betty Buckley arrived in New York on a Monday and had a Broadway job by Tuesday. Born in Big Spring, Texas, in 1947, she was the daughter of an Air Force colonel who wanted her to become an engineer, but her mother fueled her stage hunger from the start.
In 1969, she made her debut as Martha Jefferson in the musical 1776. That debut proved her technical skill was well above the average of her generation. She was not just a singer who acted, but a performer who used her voice to dissect the script.
But mainstream recognition didn't come from the stage.
Brian De Palma was recruited in 1976 to play the gym teacher in Carrie. It was a role of emotional restraint before the final bloodbath. That movie was her first major box office hit, the first time her name appeared in the credits on the big screen.
Between 1977 and 1981, she became a fixture in living rooms around the world with the series Eight Is Enough. She played Abby Bradford after the death of the actress who originally held the role. She won over the audience without any backlash and kept the show near the top of the ratings for four consecutive seasons.
And then the cat arrived.
In 1982, she opened Cats at the Winter Garden Theatre. Her performance as Grizabella and her rendition of the song Memory set an industry standard. She won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in 1983 for a role that lasted barely twenty minutes on stage.
Buckley didn't stop at musical theater success. In 1983, she appeared in Tender Mercies alongside Robert Duvall, showing she could carry rural drama with the same intensity as a major stage production. The film went on to win two Academy Awards.
M. Night Shyamalan brought her to the broader international audience in 2016 with the movie Split. She played Dr. Karen Fletcher, the psychologist trying to understand the fragmented mind of the lead character. The film grossed 278 million dollars on a budget of just nine million.
Because her interest has always been in characters who live on the edge of the abyss.
In 2021, she joined Law & Order: Special Victims Unit to play a top-tier defense attorney. Three years later, in 2024, she filmed the third season of The Cleaning Lady, playing a woman with a dark past tied to criminal networks.
Her voice spans three octaves, a range she has maintained over the past decade while performing more than eighty concerts across the United States.
