Rupert Grint sent in a homemade video rapping about his wish to play Ron Weasley. He had no professional experience outside school plays. He was eleven years old. That tape and his red hair won over Chris Columbus right away.

That started a decade locked away at the Leavesden studios. Filming Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2001 earned him a salary of 125,000 dollars. By the time the saga ended with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011, his salary per film had risen to 15 million dollars.

It was the end of an era.

The Weight of Being the Eternal Supporting Actor

The move to adult films was rough. Grint tried to step away from blockbusters with small projects and darker characters. In 2012, he starred in Into the White, a Norwegian war drama in which he played a British soldier trapped in the snow. But audiences still saw him as the best friend of the world's most famous wizard.

His bet on independent film didn't always pay off commercially. Moonwalkers flopped at the box office in 2015 despite sharing the screen with Ron Perlman. It was a moment of personal doubt, when the actor even questioned whether he really wanted to keep acting or would rather live an anonymous life away from the spotlight of London.

During that uncertain period, he bought an ice cream truck. He drove it through the villages near his home and handed out free ice pops to children because he didn't have a license to sell them. That gesture defined his relationship with fame. Grint never sought validation from the industry or leading-man roles.

Reinvention Under Shyamalan's Wing

The definitive change of direction came on television. In 2019, he began working with M. Night Shyamalan on the series Servant for Apple TV+. He played Julian Pearce, a cynical, wealthy man who dealt with family trauma through alcohol and sarcasm.

Critics finally looked the other way. Grint proved that his talent for dark humor and psychological tension surpassed that of his former co-stars. Shyamalan trusted him again for Knock at the Cabin in 2023. In this horror film, he plays Redmond, a violent and desperate character who barely appears on screen for fifteen minutes but dominates the first act.

But his work wasn't limited to acting in front of the camera. In 2017, he produced and starred in the series Snatch, based on Guy Ritchie's film. It was his first serious experience with executive producing and creative control of a large-scale project.

He learned to choose by instinct.

In 2022, he took part in the anthology Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. In the episode titled Dreams in the Witch House, he once again showed his interest in the macabre genre. Grint seems to have found a comfortable refuge in horror and suspense, genres that let him hide behind powerful physical characterizations.

Legacy and a Refuge Away from the Spotlight

Grint doesn't rely on Hollywood paychecks to maintain his lifestyle. Unlike other child actors who squandered their fortunes, he aggressively invested in British real estate. By 2020, his property portfolio was worth more than 24 million pounds through his company Clay 10.

That financial security lets him be extremely selective with his scripts. He doesn't need to work out of necessity, and it shows in the calm way he manages his public image. In May 2020, he became a father to a girl named Wednesday and decided that his absolute priority would be family life in the countryside.

Because success for him isn't a golden statuette. It's the freedom to work with cult directors and then disappear for months without anyone missing him on the red carpets. His appearance in the special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts in 2022 closed an emotional circle with his past.

The total box office of the eight films in the main saga comes to 7,700 million dollars worldwide.
