Daniel Radcliffe didn't choose to be the most famous kid in the world. He was chosen from a theater audience while watching a play with his parents. Chris Columbus saw something in his eyes, and what followed was a multimillion-dollar machine that lasted a decade.
The shadow of those round glasses was so long that any other actor would have retired to a private island. But Radcliffe decided that his accumulated fortune was a license to make strange movies. In 2012, he starred in The Woman in Black, and audiences realized he wasn't going to sit still.
The bet on the bizarre was real.
Shooting Swiss Army Man in 2016 was the definitive turning point. Playing a flatulent corpse alongside Paul Dano is not what's expected of a global star. Radcliffe sought out scripts that nobody else wanted to touch for fear of looking ridiculous.
Then came Horns in 2013 and Guns Akimbo in 2019. In the latter, he appeared in a bathrobe with two pistols screwed onto his hands. The magical franchise's worldwide box office surpassed 7,700 million dollars, a figure that allowed him to choose projects purely for intellectual pleasure.
Theater was his real acting school. Before finishing the Harry Potter films, he had already appeared nude in Equus in 2007. It was a risky move aimed at breaking his child-star image in front of thousands of spectators in the West End and on Broadway.
In 2024, he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Merrily We Roll Along. He spent months rehearsing choreography and Stephen Sondheim songs so that his voice could fill a theater without any special effects.
Industry respect no longer depended on a magic wand.
Television gave him the chance to play with anthology comedy. In 2019, he premiered Miracle Workers and stayed with the series for four seasons, playing different celebrities. From an angel in a heavenly office to an outlaw in the Old West.
Radcliffe also stepped into the shoes of real people, with significant physical demands. In 2022, he starred in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and trained to play the accordion. The film won an Emmy and confirmed that his niche is parody with heart.
During the production of his latest projects, he has kept a strict privacy policy on social media. He has no official profiles and avoids red carpets unless there's a premiere involved. His base salary for his first film was 110,000 pounds sterling.
