Synopsis of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities

Guillermo del Toro presents an anthology of eight horror stories, written and directed by different filmmakers. At the start of each episode, Del Toro appears with his own cabinet of curiosities and opens one of its drawers to introduce the story that corresponds to that piece. The core idea is that each chapter corresponds to a different object from the cabinet, so the series unfolds as if that piece of furniture were being opened little by little. According to the series' own description, the stories mix the refined and the horrifying, and Del Toro takes Rod Serling as a reference for the way he opens and closes each episode. Created by Del Toro, it streams on Netflix.

Trivia about Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities

Principal photography began under the working title "Guillermo del Toro Presents: After Midnight" on June 28, 2021 in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, and wrapped on February 16, 2022.

In September 2021, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Jennifer Kent, director of The Babadook, would write and direct an episode starring Essie Davis.

Five of the eight episodes are based on stories by Michael Shea, H.P. Lovecraft, Henry Kuttner and E.M. Carroll.

In interviews, Del Toro has expressed interest in a second season that would give more directors a chance.

On Rotten Tomatoes, 93% of the 56 critics surveyed gave the series a positive review, with an average rating of 7.6/10.

Before this series, Del Toro had already worked with Netflix as producer of the animated series Trollhunters.

Ben Barnes said that director Keith Thomas would play a sound designed to unsettle him during some scenes, a technique that, according to the actor, made him nervous on the set of "Pickman's Model".

The series earned seven Emmy nominations and won one in 2023 for its main title design; it also received nods for costume design, production design and sound editing.
