Essie Davis was born in 1970 in Tasmania and grew up surrounded by paintbrushes, since her father was a well-known local artist on the island. She studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, where she learned that acting isn't about shouting but about knowing how to look into the camera. Her early years were spent in Australia's classical theater, where she played Shakespeare and Chekhov, before film noticed her angular face.
And the wait was worth it.
In 2003 she appeared in Girl with a Pearl Earring alongside Scarlett Johansson in a supporting role that helped European casting directors take note of her name. Davis has the kind of look that fits period dramas perfectly. But international recognition took another decade to fully arrive.
The industry doesn't always know what to do with pure talent.
Everything changed in 2014 with the shoot of The Babadook. It was a physically exhausting and emotionally draining production, as the actress herself confessed in several interviews after the premiere. The film became a worldwide cult phenomenon without big advertising budgets, thanks to word of mouth at film festivals.
Jennifer Kent trusted her to bring to life a mother overwhelmed by exhaustion and grief. Critics noticed how Davis handled the character's physical transformation without slipping into caricature. But the most important thing was that this project opened the doors to major television productions in the United Kingdom and the United States.
In 2016 she joined the cast of Game of Thrones to play Lady Crane in three episodes of the sixth season. It was a brief job, but it gave her a close look at the logistics of an HBO megaproduction. So she used that visibility to choose projects where the script mattered more than the paycheck.
Silence became her greatest weapon.
Davis has worked repeatedly with her husband Justin Kurzel on films that explore violence and the human psyche. In 2019 they shot True History of the Kelly Gang, in which she played the matriarch of an outlaw clan in a hostile environment. The shoot took place in the coldest areas of Victoria during the Australian winter to achieve an atmosphere of gritty realism.
In 2021 she starred in The Justice of Bunny King in New Zealand, playing a homeless woman fighting to regain custody of her children. The shoot was completed in a few weeks under constant financial pressure. But the result was one of the rawest performances of her career, far from the red carpet spotlight.
In 2024 she took part in The Narrow Road to the Deep North, based on Richard Flanagan's novel. This Sony Pictures Television production focused on the horrors of building the Burma Railway and demanded considerable physical effort from the entire crew. The level of historical detail was the absolute priority during the months of location shooting.
The series The Last Anniversary was shot in 2024 with a crew made up mostly of local professionals in New South Wales. The production used large-format cameras and vintage lenses to achieve a specific visual texture in the night scenes.
