The Face Sydney Didn't Expect

David Wenham never set out to be the center of attention in the 1980s. He grew up in Marrickville in a large Catholic family with five sisters and an older brother. He studied at the University of Sydney, but his real training happened on alternative theater stages, where he learned to work with silence.

Theater was his trench for a full decade.

In 1998, he played Brett Sprague in the series The Boys. It was a violent, dry role that shook up the Australian industry. Wenham played a psychopath with a coldness that unsettled viewers. But just as critics were pigeonholing him as a crime-drama actor, he agreed to join the series SeaChange.

There he played Diver Dan. The role brought him unexpected fame with the general public, and entertainment magazines named him the most attractive man in the country. Wenham ignored the media noise and kept looking for scripts that would push him to change his vocal range.

Because commercial success was never his absolute priority.

The Call of Middle-earth

His leap into the global market came in 2002 with The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Peter Jackson was looking for someone who could convey Faramir's wounded nobility without relying on grand gestures. Wenham landed the role partly because of his physical resemblance to Sean Bean, but his performance brought a melancholy that was not in the early drafts.

The Jackson trilogy permanently changed his financial standing. Although Hollywood started sending him blockbuster scripts, he chose to return to Australia to shoot independent projects. In 2003, he took part in Gettin' Square, playing Johnny Spitieri. The role earned him the Australian Film Institute award for Best Actor.

In 2006, he returned to big-budget productions with 300. Under the direction of Zack Snyder, he played Dilios and provided the narration for the Spartan epic. He trained for months to reach the physical condition the shoot demanded. But after the release, he went back to smaller, more personal projects.

And the gamble paid off.

He alternated between film and quality television, and in 2013 he worked on the series Top of the Lake under the direction of Jane Campion. In this production, he proved he could sustain tension across long, dialogue-driven scenes. International critics once again praised his ability to disappear into supporting characters.

Directing and later-career projects

Before shooting, he reads the script looking for logic flaws in his character. In 2017, he decided to step behind the camera and directed his first feature film, Ellipsis. It was an experiment shot in just ten days, built around improvisation by the actors on the streets of Sydney.

In 2022, he played Hank Snow in the film Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann. The shoot took place entirely in Australia, and Wenham had to work on a Southern American accent to fit the director's baroque style. The film earned eight Academy Award nominations and grossed more than $280 million at the box office.

Between 2021 and 2023, he was part of the cast of the series The Newsreader. As Lindsay Cunningham, he got to explore the vices of 1980s newsrooms. It is a restrained performance that avoids caricature despite the character's arrogance.

In 2024, he took part in the shoot of The Surfer in Western Australia, sharing scenes with Nicolas Cage. The production was funded by private equity and state government grants to boost employment in the region. The film's final budget came to around $25 million after post-production was completed in the United States.
