Peter Jackson received his first 8mm camera at age eight and soon tried to recreate the special effects he saw on television.

He grew up in Pukekohe, a coastal town in New Zealand where movies seemed like a distant fantasy, yet within reach through trial and error. His first short films were pure homemade craftsmanship. He used his mother's kitchen to cook up concoctions that looked like human flesh and organic remains.

No one in Hollywood believed in a New Zealander making B-movies.

In 1987, he premiered Bad Taste after four years of on-and-off weekend shooting. The movie was funded with his own savings and support from his friends. It was a hit in the video market and allowed him to make Meet the Feebles in 1989, a satire with puppets that vomited and did drugs.

But the real breakthrough came in 1994 with Heavenly Creatures.

That story of a real crime in New Zealand showed that Jackson had a firm grip on psychological drama. He discovered Kate Winslet and earned his first Oscar nomination for screenwriting. It was then that he began developing the idea of adapting J.R.R. Tolkien, a project Disney turned down and New Line Cinema miraculously accepted.

The Risk of the Three Billion

Shooting three movies back to back in New Zealand cost 280 million dollars. Jackson convinced the studio executives that it was the only way to keep the visual style consistent and cut logistical costs. The The Lord of the Rings trilogy was the most ambitious project of the decade.

And the gamble paid off perfectly.

The Return of the King won 11 Oscars in 2004, tying the record held by Titanic and Ben-Hur. Jackson went from cult director to a heavyweight in the industry with his own visual effects company, Weta Digital. But massive success also brought creative complications in his next projects.

In 2005, he fulfilled his dream of shooting King Kong. The movie cost 207 million dollars and was a demonstration of technical power, although critics began to question his tendency toward excess footage. Jackson never shot short scenes because he preferred to squeeze every corner of the digital world he had created.

The Obsession with Technology and Archives

His return to Middle-earth with the The Hobbit trilogy, between 2012 and 2014, was a rocky one. Jackson took over directing at the last minute after Guillermo del Toro left the project. Preproduction problems and the decision to shoot at 48 frames per second sparked a heated debate about the aesthetics of digital cinema.

Despite the criticism, global box office revenue surpassed 2,900 million dollars.

After closing that chapter, Jackson moved away from fiction to focus on restoring historical material. In 2018, he released They Shall Not Grow Old, in which he applied colorization and sound restoration techniques to World War I recordings. The result was a documentary that erased the time barrier of black and white.

In 2021, he repeated the formula with The Beatles: Get Back. He analyzed more than 60 hours of unseen footage from 1969 to reconstruct the dynamics of the British band. He developed an artificial intelligence software called MAL to separate audio tracks that were previously impossible to isolate.

In 2024, his return to the Tolkien universe as a producer on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum was confirmed. The director of this new feature, slated for 2026, is Andy Serkis. Jackson sold Weta Digital's technology division to Unity for $1,625 million in 2021.
