Andy Serkis spent months crouching and straining his vocal cords in the forests of New Zealand so that a team of computer scientists could track his movements. It was 2000, and nobody in the industry really knew what to do with an actor who would never physically appear on screen.
That bet redefined the concept of acting.
Before making his way to Middle-earth, this son of a teacher and an Iraqi gynecologist had already honed his talent in British theater. He studied visual arts at Lancaster University, but the stage hooked him quickly. In 1989, he made his television debut with the series The New Statesman.
But his big breakthrough came when he accepted a role that many other actors would have turned down for fear of anonymity. Playing Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) led to a head-on clash with actors' unions.
Many critics couldn't tell whether the credit belonged to Serkis or to the programmers at Weta Digital. The controversy resurfaced in 2005, when he lent his body to bring King Kong to life.
Serkis insisted that motion capture technology was just a tool, like makeup or costumes. In 2011 he founded The Imaginarium Studios in London to professionalize this process. He wanted actors to regain full control over the digital creature.
The technique finally served the emotion.
His role as Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) broke through the barriers of traditional awards. Although he never received the Oscar nomination that many called for, the respect of his peers was absolute.
He made a computer-generated chimpanzee convey more pain than any flesh-and-blood actor on screen. But Serkis did not want to be trapped forever in the sensor-covered neoprene suit.
In 2017 he decided to step behind the camera with Breathe. It was a small, human film that had nothing to do with big visual effects blockbusters. Shortly after, in 2018, he released his version of Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle for Netflix.
The film cost $100 million and proved his ability to manage large-scale budgets. So in 2021, he accepted the job of directing Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
The film grossed more than $500 million worldwide despite the theater restrictions of that period.
The industry didn't know where to pigeonhole him.
In 2022, he returned to his real face for high-impact, popular projects. He played Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman and Kino Loy in the series Andor. Critics called his performance in the galactic prison one of the highlights of the franchise.
In late 2024, Warner Bros. confirmed that Serkis will direct The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The release of this new project is scheduled for 2026.
