Cate Blanchett was not born a Hollywood star. In 1992, she graduated from the Australian National Institute of Dramatic Art and began working in Sydney theater for minimal pay.
Money was not the priority.
Shekhar Kapur saw her in a play and decided she would be his Elizabeth I of England. That decision in 1998 changed the course of her career, as the American industry discovered a face that didn't fit the mold of the actresses of the time.
She won the Golden Globe and received her first Academy Award nomination. But what truly impressed producers was her ability to disappear behind heavy makeup and a red wig without losing the intensity in her gaze.
In 2004, she took on the challenge of playing Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator under the direction of Martin Scorsese. It was a risky move, since Hepburn remained very much alive in the collective memory of audiences.
She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and became the first person to win the statuette for playing another Oscar winner. That award validated her obsessive working method and her almost surgical study of other people's gestures.
Between 2008 and 2013, she chose to step away from the spotlight to co-direct the Sydney Theatre Company with her husband, Andrew Upton. Many agents in Los Angeles thought she was committing career suicide at the peak of her career.
During those years, she barely set foot on a commercial film set.
She returned to international cinema in 2013 with Blue Jasmine by Woody Allen. Her portrayal of a high-society New Yorker in the midst of a mental breakdown earned her second Oscar.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2015, she shot Carol under the direction of Todd Haynes. The film explored a lesbian relationship in the 1950s, and critics praised the emotional restraint of her character on screen.
In 2022, she starred in Tár, playing a conductor caught up in a scandal over abuse of power. For this role, she learned to speak German and to conduct real music in front of the Dresden Philharmonic.
Preparation took an entire year before the lights came on on set.
Because Blanchett tends to choose projects that demand physical or intellectual effort that goes well beyond memorizing a few lines of dialogue. That's why her name is often linked to productions that require an unusually large investment of time by modern industry standards.
In 2024, she presented Rumours at the Cannes Film Festival under the direction of Guy Maddin and Evan Johnson. It is a political satire about G7 leaders lost in a forest while trying to draft a joint statement.
The actress runs her own production company, Dirty Films, which is headquartered in Brighton.
