Two Meters of Bone and Desert

Bruce Spence stands exactly 6 feet 7 inches tall (2.01 meters). That almost cartoonishly elongated physique allowed him to break into the Australian film industry in the early 1970s. He wasn't going to be a leading man because his body didn't allow it. He was born in New Zealand in 1945, but it was in Melbourne that he began working in experimental theater before moving to the screen.

In 1971, he starred in Stork under the direction of Tim Burstall. That comedy was a local hit that earned him the Australian Academy's award for Best Actor. But it would take the world another decade to put a face to his name on a massive scale. George Miller needed someone who looked capable of surviving in a world without water and with little fuel.

Captain Gyro appeared in 1981 to change his professional destiny.

Spence brought a manic sense of humor to Mad Max 2 that contrasted with the seriousness of Mel Gibson. His character flew a rickety gyrocopter and moved with a jittery energy that made him look like a hungry bird. That performance opened the doors of Hollywood without him having to leave Australia, as Miller called him back in 1985 for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

Many viewers thought he played the same pilot. But in the third installment of the saga, his character was named Jedediah and stole Max's plane at the start of the film. Spence has always taken that mix-up between characters in stride at fan conventions. Because his face is a production design tool in its own right.

The Man of a Thousand Franchises

From the 1990s on, his career took a peculiar turn. Directors of major productions sought him out for roles where makeup or height were decisive. In 2003 he played the Train Driver in The Matrix Revolutions, a program trapped between two worlds that controlled access to the Machine City. That same year he filmed his scenes for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

And almost nobody recognized him under the helmet.

He played the Mouth of Sauron in the extended version of the Peter Jackson film. His mouth was digitally enlarged to look more grotesque as he negotiated with Aragorn before the Black Gate. Shortly after, in 2005, he took on the role of Tion Medon in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. He is one of the few actors who has worked in the three biggest sagas of contemporary cinema in such a short span of time.

But his work was not limited to hiding behind latex prosthetics or CGI. In 2017 he appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales as Mayor Dix. His ability to work on mammoth-budget shoots never pulled him away from Australian television, where he has maintained a steady presence in low-profile series.

The industry respects him for his punctuality and his lack of ego.

In 2020 he appeared in the horror film Children of the Corn and the crime drama The Dry. Despite being past seventy, his pace on set never slowed. In 2021 he lent his voice to the animated film Back to the Outback and shot The Drover's Wife, a raw western where his physical presence still commanded respect without the need for long dialogue.

George Miller worked with him again on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in 2024. This time he played the People Eater, a character who required several hours of makeup before the workday began. It's a perfect full-circle moment for an actor who started out running through the New South Wales desert more than forty years ago. Spence currently lives in Byron Bay and remains involved with his country's actors' union.

By 2024 his filmography had surpassed 110 credited titles across film and television.
