London, during World War II. Edmund and Lucy Pevensie are living with their cousin Eustace Scrubb at their aunt and uncle's house, while their older siblings, Peter and Susan, are in the United States. Edmund wants to enlist in the army, but his age prevents him, and he struggles with the wait. Lucy dreams of becoming a beautiful young woman and cannot stand the life she has been dealt. Eustace, irritating and mischievous, mocks both of them without anyone holding him back, and living together grows more tense every day. One afternoon, the three of them stop in front of a painting of a ship sailing across the ocean. Without warning, the painting pulls them into a sea that is not their own.

There once was a boy called Eustace who read books full of facts that were useless.
[While entering the room where Edmund and Lucy look at a painting of a ship on an ocean on the wall] There once were two orphans who wasted their time believing in Narnia nursery rhymes.
I can't imagine my father would be very proud that I gave up what he died for. I spent too long wanting what was taken from me and not what was given. I was given a kingdom. A people. I promise to be a better king.
