Nigel John Dermot Neill decided to go by Sam at the age of eleven because there were too many classmates in his New Zealand school who shared his first name. He wasn't looking for an artistic identity or a stage name that would shine on neon signs. He just wanted teachers not to confuse him with the other boys in his row.
That pragmatism has defined his five decades of work in front of the camera. In 1977, he starred in Sleeping Dogs and became the first face of New Zealand cinema to make a real splash abroad. But he did not settle in Los Angeles right away. He preferred to shoot My Brilliant Career in Australia in 1979 before making the leap to the European productions that truly interested him.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1981, he shot Possession under Andrzej Zulawski in a Berlin divided by the wall. It was a destructive and psychologically exhausting shoot in which he shared the screen with Isabelle Adjani. That cult film earned him the respect of international critics who wanted more than a square-jawed leading man.
In 1986 he turned down the chance to become James Bond after a screen test he still describes as sheer torture. Producers were looking for a replacement for Roger Moore, and he was the casting director's favorite candidate. But Neill hated the idea of being trapped in an action hero role for an entire decade.
He preferred working on television projects such as the series Reilly, Ace of Spies in 1983, or stepping into the skin of dark characters in genre films. Horror has always been his quiet refuge. By 1981, he had already played the devil's son in The Omen III: The Final Conflict, and years later he would plunge into cosmic madness in In the Mouth of Madness in 1994.
The year was 1993.
That schedule changed his bank account forever. He premiered The Piano under the direction of Jane Campion, and only a few months later he appeared on screens worldwide in Jurassic Park. Steven Spielberg chose him to play Dr. Alan Grant because he wanted someone who looked like a real scientist, not a gym hero. $914 million was the film's global box office during its original release, the dinosaur movie that made him a star.
Unlike other actors of his generation, Neill never stopped working on small productions in his home country. In 2016 he shot Hunt for the Wilderpeople under the direction of Taika Waititi, proving his comic touch was intact after years of intense drama. But his life took a medical turn in 2022 during the promotion of the latest installment of the Jurassic franchise.
He was diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. Instead of hiding away, he decided to write his memoir, titled Did I Ever Tell You This?, published in 2023. In its pages, he recounts his chemotherapy treatment with brutal honesty (and without a trace of self-pity).
The industry had written him off.
But in 2024 he returned to the screen in the series Apples Never Fall alongside Annette Bening. He still lives on his farm in Central Otago, New Zealand, where he runs his own winery called Two Paddocks. Seven hectares of vineyards planted with Pinot Noir grapes take up most of his time when he is not on a film set.
In 2025, his winery's certified distribution reached 7,000 cases a year, mainly for the British and Australian markets.
