Rachel Ward left school at sixteen to try her luck as a model in London. Soon after, she landed in New York, and her face began covering bus stops thanks to cosmetics campaigns. Her beauty was so striking that movies soon came calling.
Her big-screen debut was far from low-key. Burt Reynolds personally chose her for Sharky's Machine in 1981 after seeing her on a magazine cover. But the real media buzz came with television.
In 1983, she played Meggie Cleary in The Thorn Birds. The miniseries captivated the United States. Critics were harsh about her performance (some outlets called her wooden), but audiences adored her. During that shoot, she met actor Bryan Brown. They married a few months after the premiere, and she decided Hollywood was not where she wanted to grow old.
So she moved to Australia.
Her 1980s filmography includes titles such as Summer Lovers or Against All Odds in 1984. In the latter, she shared the screen with Jeff Bridges and projected a femme fatale image she herself disliked. Ward always felt uncomfortable under the male gaze of the commercial cinema of the era.
And she started looking for control.
She studied directing and screenwriting in the 1990s. She didn't want to wait for the phone to stop ringing, since she no longer fit the aesthetic standards of the major studios. In 2000, she directed her first short film, The Big House. It won the Australian Film Academy Award, which gave her the confidence to shoot her first narrative feature film.
Beautiful Kate premiered in 2009 and surprised the industry. The film explored dark, familiar themes with a sensitivity no one expected from the former melodrama star. It earned ten AFI Award nominations, including Best Director.
But her private life has always weighed more than the spotlight. She has lived on a farm north of Sydney for decades, and her interest in fiction has gradually given way to hands-on activism.
In 2023, she presented the documentary Rachel's Farm. In it, she recounts her personal shift toward regenerative agriculture after the 2019 wildfires that threatened her property. The film shows a version of Ward far removed from any artifice.
There's no trace of glamour in that film.
Production on Rachel's Farm took two years of fieldwork and live shooting in the mud. Ward is seen wrangling livestock while explaining the degradation of Australian soil. The final cut runs 88 minutes.
